This Trans Day of Visibility, we want to give trans folks some snacks (and more).

Rochester Rainbow Union is proud to announce our mutual aid campaign, “Trans Day of Staying In and Having a Nice Snack.” Based on a concept developed by podcaster Tuck Woodstuck, the campaign seeks to help people outside of the trans community understand how visibility is unavailable for many trans people. In the United States, the trans population is seeing ever-increasing attacks on their safety and way of life. These attacks come in the form of anti-trans legislation, physical threats, and housing insecurity, to name a few.

While we still uphold the need for visibility, we also recognize that visibility for individuals in the trans community is not always an option. In light of this, we’re doing this mutual aid campaign to provide direct support to trans folks in need. The Rainbow Union will raise funds to distribute directly to trans people. On March 31, any person who identifies as trans, non-binary, or genderqueer will be able to apply to receive funds ranging from $20 (a nice snack amount) to $250 (a big snack).

We will accept applications on this page on March 31 until funds run out. Priority will be given to applicants in Central and Western New York, but anyone in the trans community is invited to apply.

Trans people deserve rights, safety, respect, and support. But most of all, they deserve snacks.

I would never wish that trans people were less visible because I love to see us out in the world. But at the same time, we can’t just have visibility. We need to have, for example, human rights. And personally, I love to not be perceived, so I will be staying in and having a nice snack
