Transgender/Trans*

NYU’s online master’s program in Communicative Sciences and Disorders is making an effort to raise public awareness of the importance of healthy voice modification within the transgender community.

According to their experts, working with a Speech-Language Pathologist lowers the risk of damage to the voice when following a do-it-yourself program without guidance from a professional. Attempting the process independently may lead to using their voice ineffectively, pushing – trying to make a sound that their instrument can’t make.

NYU Steinhardt’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic put together a piece entitled Achieving Authentic Voices: Voice Modification for People in the Transgender Community, which discusses finding an authentic voice in a safe and healthy way.

QMed

QMed aims to fill some of the major gaps in care for trans* people by improving access to hormone therapy through the use of telemedicine. Just access your appointment from any smart phone, tablet or computer. For people on testosterone, one in person visit to start is federally required; otherwise take care of your needs from your couch, office or anywhere else you like!

The transgender care group was birthed in recognition of the prominence of transgender people in the Syracuse area and surrounding central New York communities. Our team presently consists of an internist, pediatrician, pharmacist/FTM advisor, psychotherapists, and voice therapist. We subscribe to the WPATH (formerly, Harry Benjamin) Standards of Care as the framework for our protocol. Our purpose is to provide a network of professional resources in our geographic region, which would allow transgender persons options for care locally.
