The house lights will go down and the amps will go up this evening at Record Archive as the first annual Queer Rock Camp showcase begins. Queer Rock Camp, part of Girls Rock! Rochester, is is a weeklong music camp for queer, gender variant, gender non-conforming and allied youth ages 12-18. “Youth and volunteers come from near and far to join their peers in this unique and imperative program. Queer Rock Camp amplifies the voice of a population that is usually silent — allowing youth to be loud and to express themselves honestly and authentically through music. NO MUSIC EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! This is a camp like no other — you will make new friends and gain confidence that lasts a lifetime.”
5 unique bands have been formed just this week and will play their works for a public audience for the first time. Doors are at 6pm, showcase begins at 6:30pm. Tickets are available at the door for a sliding scale donation of $5-$20. All proceeds directly benefit the campers and programs of GR!R.
Girls Rock! Rochester was founded in 2011 by women who believed a rock camp for girls would thrive and become a beneficial asset to their community in Rochester. Together we established a volunteer-run organization offering a camp that is designed to empower girls through rock music. The inaugural camp session was held in July of 2012 and has grown each year since. GR!R runs on a sliding scale tuition base and provides financial aid for anyone who needs it.
“Girls Rock! Rochester is run by a team of musicians, teachers, counselors, and other inspiring women of various professions who seek to empower young girls in their community and the surrounding Rochester areas. Girls Rock! Rochester hopes that through this camp they will be able to reach out to all of the strong and talented women in the area, uniting them for this cause as well as other women-empowering
Girls Rock Camp is a week-long day camp where campers receive instruction on the instrument of their choice, attend workshops, form a band with new friends, write an original song together, and perform in a showcase at a local venue in front of hundreds of supporters.”
GR!R explicitly welcomes individuals who are “female, trans (regardless of identity), or gender non-conforming to apply” between ages 8-16 to be a camper at Girls Rock! Rochester.
Participants are selected by a committee seeking to establish a balanced and diverse camp population in relation to instrument, age, previous musical experience, economic status, geography and community.
This year’s Queer Rock Camp was established as a week-long music camp for queer, gender variant, gender non-conforming and allied youth ages 12-18, to fill a need that existed and empower “LGBTQ youth and allies while building community through musical collaboration in a safer space. We support the fluidity of gender, sexuality, and identities and provide educational workshops and skillshares to amplify confidence, creativity and self-expression. We are anti-oppression, and counter ageism by encouraging youth to be fully involved in the process of organizing and leading camp activities.”
