What’s Bothering Brandon? Gay Porn in Trump’s America by Brandon W. Brooks

I, if you can believe it, have parts of me that are sexual and amorous.  Like most people in the world, sex is a part of my life, and with that, healthy and safe sexual activities.  I will shameless make the statement now that I am no stranger to online materials dedicated to sexual exploits – yes, I mean porn.

Psychodynamic theory, the very beginnings of our modern psychological model, holds sex to be a primitive driving force behind many of our motivations, appetites, and behaviors.  Sex, and our drive to have sex, holds influence over the ways in which we interpret others, how we interpret success and failure, how we organize groups of people, and how we evaluate signs of danger or distress. Pornography is one manifestation of this sexual drive and desire, and as such, provides an interesting lens through which human sexual identity and experiences may be examined.

Over the past few years, namely ever since Trump’s rise to power, I have seen a change in the type of porn marketed towards gay men.  Power dynamics and role play have always been a beloved and lucrative enterprise within pornography. Gay pornography is no exception – father/son roleplay, top/bottom, dominate/submissive, master/slave – these are all roleplay staples of gay pornography with which we are all familiar, or at least aware.

However, what troubles and bothers me is the added flavor of racism and internalized homophobia that has appeared, no, been celebrated most recently in gay pornography.  We are all aware of the increase in anti-gay and racist incidents across the country with this new presidential administration. Trump’s presidency has given silent (and not so silent) approval to those who would cultivate fear and hatred against the LGBT+ community and people of color – and gay porn is no exception.

DISCLAIMER –the following section contains extreme examples of racist and homophobic language.

Gay porn is now littered with sites dedicated to “The New American Regime” where so-called white, masculine “alphas” have been secured their so-called rightful place in the hierarchy of men.  White “straight” men are on top, while “pathetic slave faggots” are on the bottom. These non-alphas are marketed as “libtard snowflakes”, who are there to serve the alpha’s needs as a dominant paragon of heterosexual masculine (white) perfection.  These alphas are not gay, they are straight white men who have needs, and these needs are to dominate and humiliate gay men, who they identify as “faggots.” Men of color have absolutely no place within the dynamic, other than being marketed as “faggot n***er slaves” – there are no alphas of color in this “New American Regime” where alpha white straight men have been vindicated and freed from modern, enlightened thinking.

These sites cater to and feed the internalized homophobia and blatant racism instilled in all of us, regardless of race or sexual orientation.  What’s worse is that these sites are supported by gay men, who themselves are identified by the “alphas” as “cash fags.” These men activity give money to “alpha” men in exchange for verbal abuse, videos of muscles being flexed, and to be exposed on social media as being the “faggot subs” they are.   These men financially contribute to the continued sublimation, humiliation, and depravation of gay men and men of color alike.

Verbal abuse plays a large role in these scenes.  Constant verbal reminds of how low gay men are on the social ladder, how gay men are nothing but “faggots” put on the earth to serve straight white men sexually and financially, and how Trump’s administration will now help this “true and rightful” order take shape, are staples of verbal humiliation.  Again, black men are deemed even lower than this – you can imagine the verbal abuse that is associated with race-based and racism-based role play.

Now, don’t get me wrong, consenting partners can do whatever they please, but there seems to be a certain kind of dangerous and insidious momentum behind these sites.  What is happening is more than a simple sexual power dynamic or role play – it is an act of self re-traumatization. Participants on both sides are linking their past traumatic experiences with homophobia and racism with sexual desire – one of the most primitive and strongest urges within the human psyche and physiology.  They are re-experiencing trauma, be it personal or directed elsewhere, which acts to reinforce the fear and hatred behind these homophobic and racist beliefs. This is not easily undone and has a direct effect on the ways in which we view ourselves and others in daily like as well as non-sexual endeavors.

Call me a prude for not indulging in this.  Call me a hypocrite for knowing about this form of pornography while still condemning it.  Either way, I refuse to accept this as just another healthy sexual dynamic between two consenting adults.  It is unhealthy and harmful to both participants, to the LGBT+ community, and to people of color of all sexual orientations.  I find it nightmarish that internalized homophobia and racism has been willfully and consciously incorporated into one of the most primordial and elemental aspect of our human existence – sex.

People of color and gay men have been demonized throughout time, and now by the very victims themselves.
