Zariah's Story

Zariah Williamson

My dreams have become actions and actions became a reality, the purpose that’s filled within me is to join and impact the community to shake the nation for the future!

~ Zariah Williamson

The Out Alliance has helped to change and shape me into who I am today! Imagine being a young black male who identified as a female in a broken home. I was very lost and confused about the community that I felt part of. I discovered that Out Alliance had a youth program with amazing mentors and staff that helped many youths find a sense of community, love and worthiness.  I began wanting to impact my school by sharing the things I was learning at the Alliance, so I joined the GLSEN Rochester Jumpstart team. Through that I was able to meet President Obama. I became a young adult and wanted to give back to the agency that was there for me. Provided a safe place when I needed one and a listening ear to share problems and provided resources.  I went through some rough times and years later came out as a transgender woman of color and knew that was my authentic identity. With the urge to find people like me and help to provide others with resources, I started to volunteer at the agency. While helping the agency, I had some personal mental health issues and became homeless and the agency helped to find me resources. The staff was there to visit and guide me to a healthier me. I also was asked to join the ROC Pride executive team and was able to help create new inclusive events and activities. This year I joined the Speaker’s Bureau and became the Transcendent Program Coordinator. With hard work  and amazing support I was offered a position at the Alliance as a part of the Education Department.  My dreams have become actions and actions became a reality, the purpose that’s filled within me is to join and impact the community to shake the nation for the future! I attribute so much of that to the Out Alliance.

Zariah has been part of the Out Alliance family since 2007 when she became a participant in our youth programming. She grew to become a dedicated volunteer in youth, trans programming as well as a member of the ROC Pride Executive Team. In 2019, she was hired as an Education Coordinator for the agency.
